On May 12, 2025, senior lecturer Oyunsuren Damdinsuren’s International Conflict Resolution class had the privilege of hosting Dr. Samuel White from the Centre for International Law, National University of Singapore, for a compelling guest lecture titled "How Different Cultures Resolved Conflicts Before the Geneva Conventions."
Despite a brief technical setback due to connectivity and cybersecurity issues, the lecture proceeded in a unique and dynamic format—without slides or a presentation. Instead, Dr. White adopted a playful and interactive approach, directly engaging students in dialogue about global conflict resolution and their perspectives on international disputes. Students from SPSIRPA expressed their opinions openly and answered complex questions with academic rigor and clarity, making the lecture far more lively and engaging than a typical classroom session.
Dr. White’s fresh teaching style encouraged students to critically reflect on the evolution of international conflict resolution, challenging them to compare historical practices with contemporary systems. The session concluded with a thought-provoking discussion on the effectiveness of current international legal frameworks, inspired by the insights shared during the lecture.
We would like to thank Dr. Samuel White for providing students with the opportunity to re-examine the foundations of international order through a fresh lens and we also would like to congratulate him on the publication of the third volume of his acclaimed series, The Laws of Yesterday’s Wars.
